Brown bear in the Brooks River, Katmai National Park, Alaska, USA
In USA’s Katmai National Park, the ‘swelling’ is in progress. Earthy colored bears like our landing page companion are building up for the long winter, gathering at Brooks Falls to devour moving salmon. The base of the falls makes for a prime fishing spot, as it makes a brief obstruction to salmon relocating upstream. This makes the fish generally obvious targets for hungry bears, who can make up for lost time to 30 salmon daily.
This yearly gala draws in several spectators to the recreation center and a lot more on the web, where watchers can see the exhibition through live feeds. During Fat Bear Week, the general population is welcome to decide in favor of the bears that seem to pack on the most pounds. Look out for a year ago’s champ—a bear named Holly portrayed as ‘the shape and shade of a toasted marshmallow.’
